About Me

My name is James Nicholls. I am a 40-year-old tutor and BA (Hons) English Language and Literature graduate from Swindon, Wiltshire. I began my journey to creating Good Egg Tutoring in 2010, when I commenced study with the Open University while working as a Technical Assistant at the Academy of Music and Sound.

My decision to study as an adult came as a result of enduring disillusionment regarding my past experiences in education; though I was a capable young student, I found school to be a challenging environment, which ultimately failed to nurture my potential and left me lacking the academic and social confidence I needed to thrive going forward.

My degree, which included free-choice mathematics and social science modules, took six years to complete; I studied at home throughout, in comfortable surroundings, without the difficulties, distractions and inherently competitive nature of a classroom, and graduated in 2016 with First-class honours.

In 2021, I became an Additional Needs and Community Tutor for a leading Swindon-based company. Encompassing both alternative provision and private tutoring, this role required a flexible approach to teaching students of varying backgrounds and abilities, including many with SEND. The subjects I taught include English, maths, science and PSHE. I progressed quickly within this role to become a Senior Tutor, who my colleagues could consult to support their sessions.

I decided to leave this role in the January of 2024. I found that student numbers were becoming too high and that this was to the detriment of the service being provided. My firm belief, founded on both my own school experience and the edification of my time spent teaching, is that the needs of each student should be the primary focus of any educational institution.

At Good Egg Tutoring, the learner will always be my number one priority.
